 Divisions:

  • Section of Plant Physiology, 17 members
    • Chairman: Mariusz Wierzgoń, mwierzgon@us.edu.pl
    • This section conducts research related to the biotic and abiotic stress of plants. According to the nature of the interdisciplinary science society, we try to look at the problem holistically, because our research focuses on dendrochronology, ecotoxicology and plant anatomy. However, physiology is paramount. We plan short and long term projects in laboratories green houses, off-site projects in fields and mountain. We cooperate with scientist on a national and international scale. If you are interested in learning more about plants, you found the right place to check out some very interesting projects.
  • Section of Ecology, 19 members
    • The Chairman: Miroslaw Wąsiński, kn.planeta.eko@gmail.com
    • Our section brings together people interested in diverse subjects, aimed at broadening their horizons. There will be at our place for every student, regardless of the direction. We focus primarily on field studies
  • Section of Microbiology, 15 members
    • Chairman Henry Shelonzek, shelonzek@gmail.com
    • Supervisor-  Dr. Sławomir Sułowicz and mgr. Sławomir Borymski
    • Our section brings together people interested in the wider microbiology, including bacteria and yeasts and their practical application. An important element of the work of the Section is the project BioWar, which focuses on methods for isolation of unique yeast strains for use in fermentation processes, with a particular emphasis on brewing.

Projects:

Project “BioWar” realized by the Microbiology section of the student association IKNP “Planeta” is the biggest student project to ever take place in the history of our University. The Project started at the end of the summer semester during my 2nd year of studies, a little over 1 year ago. The main object of our project was to isolate and characterize wild yeast strains from nature and select them based on their capacity to ferment wort into beer.

During the course of the project, students were able to acquire the necessary funds to purchase equipment needed to develop selected yeast strains on a commercial scale. Furthermore, thanks to an alliance developed between our project and a PhD student at the University of Rzesów, we were able to learn how to grow yeast optimally in a 60-liter bioreactor.

Project „Jungle Fever” – propagation of exotic plants Municipal Palm House in Gliwice methods of in vitro cultures whose aim is to develop protocols for micropropagation plants in the collection of the Municipal Palm House in Gliwice, which hardly effectively reproduce through generative conditions unnatural. Members of the SC planet based on the available literature data develop protocols for clonal propagation methods of plant cultures in vitro.

The result will be a multiplication in the most efficient way, in vitro methods, plants which are under the supervision of the Municipal Palm House in Gliwice. The project is of great interest on the part of the authorities dean WBiOŚ that fully support the ideas of the project, giving the chance for self-development of biotechnology, many students of different specialties, and also gives you the opportunity to expand their knowledge gathered during studies students in other fields. In order to increase the number of assumed cultures and effectiveness of the results obtained it is necessary to effectively continue the project. Most of the funds allocated to the reagents that are components of culture media and laboratory equipment. The project is in the stage of substantial development, we are constantly and continuously monitored by the Municipal Palm House in Gliwice, participatory project in terms of financial and content.
